HOW DOES VOCAL PSYCHOTHERAPY WORK?
|
Vocal psychotherapy is a therapeutic technique used as part of a broader counselling approach. It relates to any use of the voice. This includes speech and singing, as well as primal sounds such as crying, laughing and calling out in an urgent/emergency situation.
I commonly have people coming to see me who have always wanted to sing or use their voice more powerfully but don't know where to start. Some are simply too scared to take the risk. Others say they feel stuck or blocked. Then there are those who have lost the connection somewhere along the way. When it comes to singing, perhaps they got too busy with family, or work, or someone said something hurtful about their voice and they stopped singing altogether. Body tension is often a big part of what gets in the way of vocal freedom. This can stem from unprocessed and 'unspent' trauma impulse trapped in the body. It may also manifest in psychological difficulties such as over thinking, avoiding feelings, anxiety, depression and low self-esteem, and behavioural difficulties such as addiction, and relationship troubles. My approach may integrate somatic (body) work, Self and Parts Work (also referred to as Internal Family Systems) and Inner Child Work. We may explore songs you've always wanted to sing, or things you've always wanted to say. We might develop original song material to find your heart/soul song, and use sound to express emotions, creative impulse and intentionality. Singing is also useful for emotion regulation, self-soothing and grounding. Whether you are drawn to work with me to enable singing, speaking or vocal self-defence, you can experience vocal liberation - where your true voice becomes a path to freedom, confidence, and deep personal transformation. Your voice matters. TESTIMONIALS |
"I booked my first session with Charlotte because I wanted to be able to sing with confidence. We achieved this, which was wonderful. But the work was so much more than that. Charlotte helped me to find my voice - literally and metaphorically. She also supported me to connect with my feelings, become more comfortable in my own skin, and work through some old issues which had been holding me back. Charlotte combines her work as a skilled therapist with voice-work, breath-work and singing to magically and powerfully unlock things that feel hidden deep inside. She has a unique combination of knowledge and skill which makes working together powerful, safe and joyful. I would recommend her to anyone, particularly women who are ready to shed some layers and step into who they really are." Em, Aus
"My work with you changed my life in a profound way. It was a turning point. I started singing because I thought it would be fun but soon realised that singing is so much more. It was a way of finding my voice and accessing something deeper. What surprised me was how much better I could sing when you helped me get some old stuff out of the way. I am so grateful to you for your insightful guidance through song. I am in a strong place now and you have been such an important part of my journey." "As a sufferer of PTSD, working with Charlotte as a counsellor has made me realise how important music and spreading the seed of love is to me. When I listen to music and sing along, I find myself in a safe and happy place. Thank you, Charlotte." Beraniece Pfitzner, Retired, Aus
"I thoroughly recommend Charlotte’s singing therapy to all trauma survivors. In 2019 I was diagnosed with severe PTSD. As a trauma survivor I needed a singing coach who would understand the triggers that might come up for me as I found my voice. I have been working with Charlotte for only a couple of months and the difference in my vocal quality, as well as confidence in using my voice, has been profound. Charlotte's training as a counsellor and singing coach, coupled with her exceptional kindness and authenticity, has offered the most beautiful space within which I have been able to flourish. In a way that I did not think possible. Thank you Charlotte for holding that space for me in a way no-one else could." Rachel Vaughan, Aus
